Japan Diaries (Part 1)

I never thought I would go to Japan. Honestly, it wasn’t even on my bucket list. Having lived in the USA for 10 years and now in Europe for the past 5 years, I did not think I would travel to the Far East.

This year in March, however, I got the opportunity to travel to Tokyo (twice) and even better, with all my expenses paid for, since they were business trips. The first of the two trips was a trip of many firsts. I traveled business class for the first time, used a toilet with a heated seat (more on that later) for the first time, chalked up a taxi bill of 38,000 JPY (roughly 300 EUR) traveling to the hotel from the airport, successfully ate with chopsticks and the list goes on.

Some things were as I had expected, such as the tiny hotel room. Others were not. Such was the little things, like a nightshirt provided by the hotel, which I could not get myself to wear since I absolutely refuse to sleep in clothes used by someone else. Some may consider that prudish…but I have my limits. I read somewhere later, that the Japanese believe that guests should have all the necessary items for a night’s stay in case they have forgotten to bring their own. Hence all hotels provide some form of sleepwear, slippers, and toiletries. The other thing always present in a Japanese hotel room is a humidifier/air purifier which I could have really done without since the room was really small, to begin with, and I also did not think the air quality to be particularly bad.

I could write an entire page about the toilets in Japan, but I will stick to a paragraph. I quite literally rolled my eyes when I saw the first one of these gadgets. Yes, they are gadgets, with various functions that can very possibly make you really nervous. Firstly, most have heated seats which is a boon since toilets in public places other than airports maybe are not heated. All of them have an integrated bidet and shower function to wash your behind, wherein the intensity of the jet and temperature of the water can be varied. Naturally, there is an air jet to dry your behind after washing. There is also a function to clean the bidet prior to use, which apparently can be set to run automatically every time you sit on the toilet. Some can also play a flushing sound or other music to muffle the natural sounds of bodily functions!! If that all wasn’t enough, most also have a deodorizer which runs automatically after you get off, so that you don’t leave nasty smells behind!!  Thankfully, most of the buttons have pictograms and are labeled in both English and Japanese. Using the toilet is apparently some kind of ritual in Japan, and they take it very seriously there.

After I was settled in my room, I went for a stroll outside my hotel. Along the way, I found that I could buy a beverage like tea, coffee, water and sometimes even beer anywhere if I figured out how to use the ubiquitous drink vending machines. If not, there is a convenience store such as a 7/11 in every block, which will have a variety of drinks, both hot and cold. Yes, one can purchase hot tea or coffee in bottles there. They actually have vending machines and convenience store shelves with heating and cooling functions. This is apparently so that patrons are able to enjoy drinks such as a tea and coffee in any weather. The drink vending machines reminded me of the cigarette vending machines here in Germany of which there is one on every corner. How I wish they could be replaced with drink machines instead!!!

The bottled tea was actually very good. I tried different types, however, the oolong tea (although not Japanese) and Hojicha were my drinks of choice. Hojicha, I discovered is a Japanese green tea brewed from roasted green tea leaves, due to which it is virtually caffeine free. I even got to the point of having a preference for a certain brand of bottled oolong tea over another!! All of the unflavored teas are pure leaf and sugar-free so one can enjoy them relatively guilt-free. Since I am a huge coffee snob, I reluctantly tried some bottled coffee. It was not bad, however, was definitely not my first choice of beverage. I preferred to walk over to the nearest convenience store and purchase a cup of freshly brewed coffee, as the office did not provide any complimentary coffee, however Japanese green tea or Sencha was available (also from a machine J).

Now that you have read, and hopefully enjoyed the introductory chapter to my Japan Diaries, I intend to continue next month with more topics such as food, people and culture.

Stay tuned…

Past

Why does Past bother us? Because we let it do so. Some people including me, constantly visit past and stay there making it their permanent home. Of course, we are regaled with memories, emotions and find it hard to step out of that "home". What is past anyway? It is something that has already happened in your life and which is now just a memory involving people, events, objects, etc. I will be personifying past and hereon I will be referring to it as a host who lives in a house. So, who are these various hosts who want to welcome you and are often beguiling? Let’s consider some of them.

Our first host is called Iwillmakeyoufeelguiltymemory. You enter their home with fear. You feel spineless. In their home, you will see how you have wronged people or let yourself down in a situation. Just listen to what this host is telling you, say sorry and step out feeling light. Vow to yourself that you will be a better person and avoid to visit this house again.

Our second host is Iamyourwonderfulmemory. You enter their house feeling quite upbeat. You feel really welcome there. Enjoy their hospitality, assimilate all the happy memories say thank you and step out. You have learned or know the technique to create these wonderful and happy memories. Be proud of your achievement and vow to yourself that you will continue the good work so you can visit this house again.

Our third host is Iwillmakeyouangrymemory. You enter their house seeking revenge about something or someone who has been unjust to you or your loved one. Here you can see the people, events, and situations that justify the cause of your anger. You feel like screaming and wishing they were punished. Why should you take the burden of plotting revenge and punishing them? They are going to get punished eventually if they haven't been already. Don't wait for this to happen though, move on. Step out of this house being mindful of who have wronged you and plan what your response should be in dealing with these people. Do not let such people dictate your behavior and do not react. In short, do not give them any more power. You are the master so that you can plan, prepare and give an appropriate response when the situation demands.

Please bear in mind, that in this context I am not referring to people who have committed heinous crimes or barbaric deeds. Those people are inhuman and have to be severely punished and that path or process is very different.

To summarise, visit these hosts for a short stay and say goodbye to them. Do not dwell in their houses permanently as that’s not where you are meant to be. Accept the events that have been unfolded along with the disappointments and the joys, but do not let these overpower you. You have a lot of things to do, responsibilities to fulfill and many things to achieve in the present and the future.

Choose to look away She wants to stay with herself.

Dusky Dawn

the WATER is on FIRE
it's an all-black coast
drenched in sludge

a lone seagull returns from afar
unassuming
submerged in SLICK
it tries desperately
to flap its wings

a cry of agony
melts the thick AIR

the SUN plays hide and seek
as if contemplating
emerging from the nightmare

the bird looks on
for a chance to shed the dark mantel
and come alive once again

Personal development is your Springboard to Excellence

We often see that people very good at Academics cannot deal with stress, criticism, negativity or failures. Despite having a high Intelligence Quotient they are utter failures in their personal and professional lives. This is because Technical skills are needed only to the extent of 20% in our day to day life but the skills required to face all these are Soft skills. Even though learning and genius are important, the practical man who is gifted with or has developed soft skills is far better equipped for the battle of Life. Common sense is more important and useful than fine and exalted sense. No matter wherever a man goes, whichever school he attends, his best opportunity is his own self, in his self-development.

Today, Soft skills are gaining more importance than hard skills as Survey proves that regardless of industry, Soft skills are more important than hard skills. They help one to excel in Workplace as well as the personal and Social front.

In our everyday life, whether at Workplace or otherwise, we come across various situations where we need skill sets like good communication skills, interpersonal skills, analytical skills, problem-solving skills, planning, control, Empathy, time management, stress management, etc. All these come under the umbrella of Soft skills.

Soft skills help in inculcating positive attitudes like likable Personality, adaptability, self-confidence, etc and thus further help in bringing inner peace, success, improved relationships, better health, happiness, and satisfaction. And the most important is developing Emotional Quotient ( which is more important than Intelligence Quotient) as it helps the daily affairs of life move more smoothly and makes life look bright and promising.

Thus it does not matter which university we have graduated from or which subject we have mastered, we need to be graduates in the University of Life.

Marketing or addiction?

I wonder, why in Germany, everyone smokes. Why is smoking so well accepted, so run-of-the-mill and not even discussed as an issue?
And then while I was shopping at the Nahkauf next to our house. I knew the answer. Thanks to several marketing geniuses, cigarettes are always kept at the counter, where everyone invariably has to pass through. A person who is trying to quit is invariably weakened into buying, by simply glancing at a variety of options.
Would this be ethical and responsible marketing? Shouldn’t marketers and shop layout designers seriously re-consider displaying cigarette options at a less attractive place in the store?

Spring Cleaning

It feels squeaky sparkly clean! One has got to experience this with one’s inner eye. A clutter-free space all of your own, all for yourself where creativity and happiness can go skipping hand-in-hand till eternity and it just feels so light and floaty like the dandelion clocks in spring. I am loving it so much that I am loving myself because of it, a bit more every moment. Life seems worth living. There’s finally place for me in my own world – a world previously cluttered with the unwanted – putrid garbage of eons which I decided to shake off one fine day. And am I glad!
